Cocktail Friday (33) – Dawa (One-A-Day 238/365)

Oooo finally it’s Friday! :D

Not only is it my day off today but Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released and I knew exactly what cocktail I wanted to make tonight after seeing it in the book last week.

I’ll keep this short and sweet (very sweet actually!) since I’m missing out on precious Deus Ex time and I’m off to bed early tonight with an early start at work tomorrow.

According to most information I can find the Dawa is credited as being an African cocktail but a few places have it listed as being imported from Brazil. Either way the combination of ingredients made it sound too good to be true so I reserved this Friday for it. What’s in it then?

  • 25ml sugar syrup
  • lime wedges
  • ice
  • 50ml Vodka
  • Honey

Honey and vodka in the same glass?! Genius! I know you can buy honey vodka’s but this is just a step above it and of course mixed with fresh lime juice! All you need to do is add the ingredients in the above order stopping to muddle the lime and sugar syrup.

The ice should ideally be crushed but my efforts were futile (bagged, hit with a vodka bottle!) and I ended up with an awful hybrid of chunks and crushed ice. Still did the job which was to chill the vodka on the way don to join the lime & sugar syrup.

Finally a big squeeze of honey is added on top of the ice and allowed to slowly fall through into the drink creating a lovely sweet flavour which has an amazing fresh lime taste too! The only downsides I can see with this drink is there isn’t enough of it and that the honey becomes very cold and extremely thick and can get stuck in the straw(s).

I think I might have another now!
