Been a tough day today and a horrendous 3 days where I think I’ve spent something close to £250 on what is essentially superfluous rubbish. Well not exactly….drum gear is expensive but will last and fuel is essential. I bought a load of Kopparberg though which is possibly not as essential but it does play an important part at this time of year….
Still awkward intro paragraph out of the way and I can get to the important stuff – making cocktails! Today I decided to make something that is just coming into season what with Thanksgiving and of course Christmas coming up – Egg Nog!
I’ve always been curious about this drink and simultaneously curious and horrified on the inclusion of raw eggs into the mix. The recipe I worked from today specified to use rum but never specified which kind. In this case I used white rum but will be repeating the experiment with dark rum and brandy which is mostly an excuses to drink!
Anyway recipe:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon sugar syrup
- 2 measures white rum
- 6 measures milk (I used blue top, 4% fat)
- Nutmeg
The first 4 ingredients above go into a shaker half filled with ice and then shaken for a one minute. I’d advise wearing gloves or your hands will turn a funny white colour – cold, cold, cold! This should fully breakdown the egg and mix it with the rum and milk.
After that it needs to be strained into your drinking vessel of choice and finally a little nutmeg grated on top to decorate it. Drink up!
As drinks go it is amazing! It mostly just tastes of milk but the scent of nutmeg as you drink is very nice and I honestly couldn’t tell that there was any egg in there at all. Can’t wait to try the other versions as mentioned earlier.

Never tried egg nog … why does that seem like a familiar sentence? Have I typed it on another entry?
No! Wait” I typed it on your fb photo I think!
