Another one bites the dust….

A TV Show that is. Angel to be precise.

It’s a show I started watching some 5 years ago whilst working in a petrol station that at its peak had 26 customers a day. This of course allowed me plenty of time to sit around watching TV. I had free money so I bought Angel boxsets and started watching. During work of course ;)

Sadly the petrol station closed as the business went into administration and I was only partway through the 2nd season. Then I hit a patch with no money and went a long time without finishing the story. Recently at the nagging of a certain Mr. Wud I finally got around to buying and watching the entire 5 season DVD Boxset. Infact I posted about it way back in August with some pretty bad pictures.

Due to work it’s taken me some 2 months to get through the whole thing but damn what a journey. Following on from where Buffy season 3 ended we find Angel in LA killing the bad guys. Of course he runs into a few new friends and makes some pretty big foes too.

All sorts of interesting twists and turns happen along the way but it all seems to hang together quite well (in the context of the Angel universe) including a trip to an alternate reality, the birth of Angels son and the re-birth of an ancient demon know as Ilyria. Of course this naturally leads to yet another apocalypse which is sadly where we leave the show for good :(

All in all for £80 I feel it was a fantastic bargain and somethign I can watch again and again. I thoroughly recommend this series to anyone who has a passing interest in supernatural type shows or has seen any of Joss Wheadons other work :)

It really is amazing. I’ve watched through it fully twice now as well as seeing other episodes here and there and as a whole I genuinely feel it just pips Buffy in terms of overall quality.

The alternate realities where Wolfram and Hart are around is genius, the characters throughout all 5 seasons beautifully realised and an adult humour just makes it one of the finest TV shows ever made for me.

How the good meets the bad, how Angel is being played, how for large periods of time you’d have a continual story only to be broke up by an individual episode that is pure awesome (Harms Way and Smile Time both come to mind).

It also has one of the best endings I’ve ever seen for the finale of a show.

You can only commend Joss Whedon on creating shows on the scale of Buffy and Angel and creating a seperate, successful and brilliant show from Angel, taking it out of the Buffy world and having it simply work. Joss Whedon is a genius in a world where too many writers get undue praise.
