I’ve been moping around the house most of the day after the events of last night wondering what to write about today when it occurred to me what an unusual thing I’ve done recently. Reading.
Apparently when younger I was always reading above my age and parents, family and teachers a like were all very impressed. Of course like a lot of things I stopped reading during my teenage years and I have to say I’m not sure why. Admittedly I did play a lot of video games in my teens which may have something to do with it.
During the past 3 years or so I have started reading again and naturally I’m thoroughly enjoying it as you might expect. I wouldn’t say that I’m well read by any means and I tend to purchase most of my books from work on a 2 for £8 offer. At last count I had 12 books in my pile of shame and that is getting worse all the time as I find an author I like.
So the next obvious question is who do I like? For starters I’m currently reading the DS Logan McRae series of books written by Stuart MacBride which are crime fiction books set in and around Aberdeen. I’m really enjoying them as they seem to be quite visceral and the characters reactions to the events seem more real.
Other authors that I like to read are:
- Tom Clancy
- Karin Slaughter
- Jeffery Deaver
- Stephen Leather
- Clive Cussler
As you can probably tell from that list I rather like my crime fiction as mentioned previously and what you might call action/adventure type books with some form of military/ex military bias to the characters. Maybe they aren’t masterpieces of our time but they are certainly entertaining reads and keep me from being bored when I tire of gaming.
More unusual for me (at least since the new year) is the pace at which I’ve been reading the books. At the start of the year I’d never read a book by Stuart MacBride. I’ve now read 4 and am starting my fifth tonight. I really can’t wait to see what comes next for the characters involved and some of the difficulties they are going through.
As for my favourite book? Definitely a book by Tom Clancy. A book that has had many, many games made based on it. Games that I’ve never really got on with for that matter – still no idea?
My favourite book is Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy. If you’ve not read I’d certainly recommend it as I reckon it’s rather a good read and plenty of seemingly pointless stories all feed together nicely.
What’s your favourite book and which authors do you read?
